Crime Thriller Movies: This Week's Releases
It’s the weekend. Films are released at the weekend, so that you can go and enjoy them. Seeing as you’re looking at a Crime Thriller blog, I’m guessing there may be some crime thrillers that tickle your fancy.
Deadfall has a crime-thriller title, no question. Say it with a deep announcer’s drawl… Deadfallllll.
It stars Eric Bana – we like him, I think – and Charlie Hunnam, Geordie star of Sons of Anarchy, which recently finished its fifth, so-so season on FX.
Hunnam’s also a writer, with a well-liked Dracula script in development, so we definitely like him. He’s going to be starring in one of the summer’s biggest movies, Pacific Rim, which is about giant robots fighting giant monsters and - just a wild guess, this—will feature mucho destruction. As much as I’d like to pin up the trailer for Pacific Rim, that’s not what this blog is about.
Deadfall is altogether smaller fayre, about what happens when two brothers on the run from a casino heist gone wrong collide with a troubled ex-boxer. Trouble happens, that’s what.
The reviews were – um. But the cast also includes Olivia Wilde, Kris Kristofferson and Sissy Spacek, so how bad can it be, right?

A Hijacking was a wow at the Venice, Toronto and London film festivals - which probably means it got some polite claps. The movie follows the fortunes of a group of men whose cargo ship is hijacked by Somali pirates. The men find themselves pawns in a game played out between the pirates and the CEO of their shipping company.
A Hijacking is the directed by the man who wrote The Hunt, starring our old friend Mads Mikkelsen, and episodes of Borgen, so it’s worth a look, I reckon.

Yes, of course it was in Danish—what else were you expecting?
Mud has got some good word of mouth, as well. It’s got a Tom Sawyer vibe to it, as two teenage boys encounter a fugitive and help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail so that he can reunite with his true love.
Matthew McConaughey’s in it, but I’ve no idea if that’s a good thing or not. Decide for yourself:
